The BarrierA Variety of Functions

The BarrierA Variety of Functions

Illustration

A barrier is a function of the film. It prevents oxygen, moisture and other substances from penetrating the film that may alter or deteriorate the quality of its contents. It is one of the most important functions of packaging or protective materials, and often extends the shelf-life for products that incorporate it.

  • Barriers protect a product from external elements that cause it to go bad. This includes oxygen, which can lead to oxidation and spoilage; moisture, which can cause condensation, mold, and degradation; and aromas or odors from the outside that could affect the product's taste and smell.

  • For food products, barriers keep in the good things, like flavor, aroma, texture, and nutritional value. For non-food items, such as electronics or pharmaceuticals, they protect against corrosion, moisture damage, and chemical degradation.

  • A strong barrier prevents contaminants from getting in and protects against the loss of vital components, such as a medicine's active ingredients or an electronic device's delicate parts. This helps ensure the product is safe and effective when it reaches the consumer.

The Layer StructureTOPPAN's Patented Technology

TOPPAN's GL high-barrier film is engineered with a sophisticated three-layer structure to provide superior protection and functionality.

Durable Base Layer

The film starts with a strong substrate, either PET, BOPP, or HDPE—that provides essential mechanical strength and heat resistance.

High-Performance Barrier Layer

A transparent, inorganic coating of aluminium oxide (AlOx) or silicon oxide (SiOx) is applied to provide an exceptional barrier against both oxygen and moisture.

Protective Top Coating

A final layer is added to increase bond strength and enhance overall barrier properties.

Integrated Performance

This multi-layered design combines physical durability, superior barrier performance, and seal integrity into a single, high-performance film.

The Performance ComparisonGL Film - A Superior Barrier Solution

The GL high-barrier film's silicon oxide (SiOx) or aluminium oxide (AlOx) coating is technically superior to alternative barrier materials like EVOH and PVDC.

Superior Barrier Performance

The inorganic SiOx or AlOx coating provides a critical dual-barrier against both oxygen and water vapor, outperforming many alternative materials.

Stable in Any Environment

Unlike EVOH, which is moisture-sensitive, the GL film's performance remains stable regardless of humidity levels.

Eco-Friendly Choice

The inorganic coating is a more sustainable alternative to PVDC, as it contains no chlorine and simplifies the recycling process.

Enhanced Product Visibility

The transparency of the barrier layer allows for clear product display, a key feature for modern food packaging.

The Advantages

Providing the Highest Quality & Technical Performance

  • Stable Performance:: The film shows almost no dependence on temperature or humidity, making it suitable for a wide range of applications and resistant to barrier degradation even in high-humidity environments for long periods of time.
Durable Barrier Layer: This layer retains its barrier properties after repeated bending and shows almost no degradation even when subjected to high-temperature processes like retort processing.

  • Microwave-Safe: This film can be used for a variety of microwavable packaging applications.
Metal Detector Friendly: The material does not interfere with metal detectors, allowing for the easy detection of foreign matter contamination.

  • High Transparency: The transparent film provides a clear view of the product, attracting customers and boosting sales.
Quality and Freshness Perception: A transparent film allows consumers to visually inspect the product before they buy it.

  • Source Reduction: By reducing the amount of packaging material used, the film helps to lower CO2 emissions.
Eco-Friendly: The film is designed for sustainability. It generates almost no residue or harmful gases during incineration, and it's part of a product lineup that includes solutions for mono-material packaging and films that use recycled materials.

  • Stable Performance: This film's performance remains stable and is unaffected by temperature or surrounding environment.
Reliable in Diverse Conditions: The film is designed to maintain its barrier properties even when exposed to a wide range of external factors.

  • Barrier Property: The film retains its barrier property even after repeated bending.

Physical Stress: It maintains its integrity and performance even under physical stress.

  • Humidity-Independent Performance: Unlike EVOH, which loses its barrier properties in humid conditions, the GL film's inorganic coating remains stable regardless of moisture.

    Superior Environmental Profile:
Compared to PVDC, the GL film is a more eco-friendly option as its chlorine-free coating simplifies the recycling process.

  • Long-Term Water Resistance: The film provides a high-level barrier that effectively prevents moisture loss (evaporation) from the packaging over a long period.

Shelf-Life Preservation: This ensures the product's quality, texture, and flavor are maintained, protecting it from both internal moisture loss and external moisture gain.
